The Thames

An art exhibition by Daniel Worth at Paul McPherson gallery
1st-12th of November 2011

Paintings and sculpture by Australian artist Daniel Worth inspired by his time spent exploring along the river Thames. This exhibition focuses on the mercurial nature of the river: how it changes its colour and presence with the seasons, weather, location, day, night, high and low tide. Various artworks have been created from searching on the river banks for discarded materials to recycle into surfaces to paint on and objects to use for sculpture.

Above are photos from the opening of my art exhibition called Little Places at the Worcester Arts Workshop in Worcester. I hung 23 small paintings in their Cafe Bliss Gallery of different places that caught my eye during my travels in England, Scotland, France and Spain. It was a really fun day they had 5 bands playing, good food, drink and people.

Stretching a long canvas

Above is a canvas I have made 61 x 182cm. It was so long that it nearly didn't fit on my floor between my desk and cupboard door. But I managed to stretch it in my small bedroom/studio space and now I am about to start painting a full moon over Paris panorama on it.

This owl sculpture was created from a block of sandstone my friend bought for me to sculpt over 2 years ago. Originally I didn't use it because it was too soft and crumbly in some places and very hard in others. Making it possible to sculpt using a paint brush while in other areas you had to use a hammer and chisel. It was fun to be able to carve the stone by mainly using an axe and a garden pick! I'm glad I persisted with this stone because I think the owl looks great sitting on top of a bolder in Monique's property in Mallorca.

The Wooden Women Sculpture

I have been working on a wood sculpture on and off for almost 3 months now. The shape of this sculpture was inspired by a cardboard cut out I made from a stencil for my Golden lady print. The completed sculpture is made up of 3 different types of wood (Walnut, oak and Cherry) with a total of 4 pieces of wood joined together. Making it 56cm high and 14cm at it's widest point.

To finalize this piece I will polish it with bees wax and paint the plinth dark brown.

Painting the Thames

Today I took a canvas (90 x 90cm) down to the Thames to start my first painting of the river. It was a bit difficult with the wind blowing the canvas around but I managed to get the basic compositional sketch done. I will work on it at home and finish it over the next couple of days.

The Heron woodcut (state #2)

This is the second stage for printing my Heron woodcut. All up there will be a total of 6 artist's proofs and 15 in the edition. The next step is to cut out and print a light grey on the bird and moon. After this I will print it again with dark grey and then a final time with black. Making this the largest and the most colours I have done in one print before.

I would like to create many paintings of the rivers surface and all the things upon it. While I was in Bunderberg visiting my Nanna she asked me to paint her old rusty freezer for her. I gave it a face lift by using enamels to paint a picture of daisies reaching towards the sun. The design was simple but most importantly Nanna was happy with it!

This painting of waves has been inspired by Brett Whiteley's Thebes revenge and Hokusai's famous Japanese woodcut print called under the waves.
I like the feeling of these two large waves about to crash down underneath the tranquil starry sky with the full moon. I plan to do a limited edition woodcut print of this image in the near future.

It has been a while since I have updated my blog. Due to crappy Internet providers so I haven't had the Internet at home for a few weeks and I have also just come back from at nice little holiday in ST Ives Cornwall.

The picture above is of pages drying just below my bedroom ceiling. The book I am creating will be made from a total of 17 woodcut blocks that will make a total of 20 books. So 17 x 20 is a lot of prints to do! and each one has to be as accurate as possible! I love the process of book making and maybe this little book about a boat journey will be a good way to start getting back into it.

I plan to have the book completed by the end of this month.
